Mashzhan Akzhigit was born in Karagandy, Kazakhstan, in 1995. He holds BSc and MSc degrees in Biotechnology, Karagandy state University.

Akzhigit is currently enrolled as a third-year PhD student at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Almaty, Kazakhstan. He is also a member of the Extremophiles and Biotechnology research group, Faculty of Biological Sciences, University of Bergen. The topic of his PhD project is “Metagenomic analysis of bacterial communities in hot springs of Almaty region”.

Akzhigit is an author of more than 15 scientific papers. He has a broad interest in various biological sciences areas such as molecular biology, bioinformatics, phylogeny and evolution of prokaryotes. His current research activities include microbial biotechnology, extremophiles, and environmental microbiology.
